PROBLEMATIKA PŘELIDNĚNÍ – MYSTIFIKACE ANEBO NEVYHNUTELNÁ BUDOUCNOST? / THE ISSUE OF OVERPOPULATION – MYSTIFICATION OR AN INEVITABLE FUTURE?

Předpokládaný růst lidské populace je předmětem mnoha spekulací, dohadů, prognóz a diskuzí. Odlišná pojetí této tématiky závisí na aktuálních datových zdrojích, metodologii a předpokladech, zároveň však z výsledných analýz čiší neodlučitelný pocit nejistoty. Je strach z přelidnění opodstatněný? Bude v budoucnu třeba razantně zakročit a omezit natalitu druhu Homo sapiens?

S přemnožením lidského druhu úzce souvisí otázka nedostatku vzácných zdrojů, u nichž hrozí, že nerozumné hospodaření vyústí v katastrofu. Proti úvahám o budoucnosti lidstva nejsou imunní vědci, filozofové ani spisovatelé, kteří své obavy reflektují v současné sci-fi tvorbě. Významným zdrojem informací je kniha Davida Attenborougha (Život na naší planetě: Mé svědectví a vize pro budoucnost, 2021), která představuje komplexní souhrn lidského vlivu na ekosystém v průběhu uplynulého století a očekávané vize budoucnosti. Uvedená data lze konfrontovat s pohledem Hanse Roslinga (Faktomluva, 2018), který vnáší nový pohled na křivky grafů populačního růstu, jak je předpovídá OSN.

Problematika přelidnění je nepochybně vhodným úvodem pro komplexnější studium dopadů lidského invazivního počínání. Měli bychom se však zeptat sami sebe, jestli je ústředním problémem počet lidí obývajících planetu Zemi, anebo spíše to, jakým způsobem „existujeme“.

The expected growth of the human population is the subject of much speculation, conjecture, forecasting and discussion. Different conceptions of this topic depend on current data sources, methodology and assumptions, but at the same time, the resulting analyzes exude an inseparable feeling of uncertainty. Is the fear of overpopulation justified? Will it be necessary to take drastic measures in the future to limit the birth rate of Homo sapiens?

Closely related to the overpopulation of the human species is the issue of the lack of precious resources, where unreasonable management threatens to result in disaster. Scientists, philosophers, and writers who reflect their concerns in contemporary science fiction are not immune to considerations about the future of humanity. An important source of information is David Attenborough's book (A Life on Our Planet – My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future, 2020), which presents a comprehensive summary of human impact on the ecosystem over the past century and an expected vision of the future. The given data can be confronted with the view of Hans Rosling (Factfulness, 2018), which introduces a new perspective on the curves of the population growth graphs as predicted by the UN.

The issue of overpopulation is undoubtedly a suitable introduction to a more comprehensive study of the effects of human invasive behavior. However, we should ask ourselves if the central problem is the number of people inhabiting planet Earth, or rather the way in which we "exist".
