Abstract

Abstract:

Community gardens represent a unique place where people from different social groups meet to co-create and share space. A community garden is not only an ecological or urban project, but can also be an effective tool for social work – especially in the areas of community building, social inclusion and strengthening intergenerational ties. Gardens are often created as grassroots civic initiatives, but their functioning involves a wide range of actors – local residents, social workers, educators, non-profit organizations, city governments and even businesses. It is this diversity of actors that is the reason why community gardens can be understood as microworlds of collaboration, where new forms of coexistence, sharing and care are tested – not only for nature, but also for people. The aim of this article is to show that community gardens can be an effective tool for social work, as they can serve as an intervention space for social workers, where it is possible to work with the community in an informal, participatory and preventive way. At the same time, the article draws on examples of good practice from abroad, which illustrate how community gardens can be effective tools in the field of inclusive, environmental and participatory social work.
